Russia’s Largest Overnight Drone Assault on Ukraine: 479 Drones Fired

1 min read

In what Ukrainian officials are calling the largest overnight drone attack of the war, Russia launched an astonishing 479 drones against Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force announced Monday. The assault also included the firing of 20 missiles of various types across different regions of the country.

The Ukrainian air force reported that their defenses intercepted and destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles mid-flight. They claimed that only about 10 drones or missiles successfully struck their targets, though independent verification of these figures remains unavailable.

Typically, Russia’s aerial assaults occur during late-night hours, as drones are harder to detect in the darkness. These relentless attacks have primarily targeted civilian areas, especially in central and western Ukraine, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

Since the onset of the conflict more than three years ago, Russia’s use of Shahed drones has resulted in the deaths of over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to United Nations figures. Russia maintains that its strikes are aimed solely at military targets, a claim met with skepticism by many international observers and Ukrainian officials.

The ongoing drone warfare underscores the brutal and persistent nature of the conflict, with each attack adding to the mounting toll on Ukraine’s civilian population.
