A Russian An‑26 military transport aircraft slammed into a cliff in Crimea, killing all 29 people on board, according to reports from Russian news agencies citing the country’s defense ministry. The wreckage was located on the Crimean peninsula—territory Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014-after the aircraft abruptly lost communication during its flight.
TASS reported that the aircraft carried 23 passengers and six crew members, none of whom survived. The cause of the crash has not yet been officially confirmed, but early assessments point to a technical malfunction rather than external interference.
RIA Novosti added that investigators are examining the debris field to determine what went wrong in the final moments before impact. Russia’s defense ministry has not issued further comment and has yet to respond to inquiries made outside regular business hours.
The An‑26, a Soviet‑era twin‑engine transport plane, has been involved in several fatal incidents over the years, raising ongoing questions about the aging fleet’s safety record. This latest tragedy adds to a growing list of aviation losses for Russia amid heightened military activity in the region.
