Russian Drone Strike Forces Massive Blackouts in Kryvyi Rih

Russian drones hit critical infrastructure in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on Wednesday, triggering emergency power cuts for more than 45,000 residents and disrupting heating systems as winter temperatures bite. Local military administration chief Oleksandr Vilkul urged residents to store water and charge essential devices, warning that the hours ahead would be difficult.

Pumping stations switched to generators to keep water flowing, although officials cautioned that pressure issues were likely. The full extent of the damage was still being assessed, and Russia offered no immediate comment on the strike.

Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power plants, substations and transmission lines throughout the nearly four year war, using drones and missiles to cripple electricity and heating supplies and disrupt industrial operations. Kyiv says these attacks have forced rolling blackouts across the country, with repair crews working under fire as Ukraine leans on air defenses and imported electricity to stabilize the grid.

Kryvyi Rih, a major steel and mining center in the Dnipropetrovsk region and the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky, has suffered repeated strikes that have killed civilians and damaged homes and industrial facilities. Its proximity to the southern front lines keeps it within easy strike range, while its factories, transport links and workforce make it a vital rear area supporting Ukraine’s war effort.
