A Russian drone attack on Kyiv early Sunday resulted in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries, igniting fires in high-rise apartment buildings across the capital, according to Ukrainian officials. Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the incident as a “massive enemy drone attack” in a post on the Telegram messaging app.
The full extent of the overnight assault remains unclear, but witnesses reported hearing several explosions, indicating the operation of air defense systems. The state emergency service shared images of firefighters battling blazes, including high up in a residential building.
One victim was killed when debris from a drone ignited a fire in a high-rise in the Dniprovskyi district, prompting the evacuation of at least 27 residents. Another person died in the Holosiivskyi district, as confirmed by the emergency service.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts from the United States to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, both sides continue to report strikes. At least seven individuals sustained injuries throughout Kyiv, and emergency services were deployed to various districts to address the fires, Klitschko reported. In the regions surrounding the capital, two additional injuries and damage to several houses were reported, according to regional Governor Mykola Kalashnik.
There has been no immediate response from Russia regarding the attack. Both parties assert they do not target civilians in the ongoing conflict, which escalated with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago. Kyiv and its neighboring regions, along with eastern Ukraine, experienced air raid alerts for over five hours beginning late Saturday, as indicated by Ukraine’s Air Force maps.
