Russia Warns Citizens Against Travel to the U.S. Amid Rising Tensions

In a stark warning on Wednesday, Russia advised its citizens against traveling to the United States, Canada, and several European Union countries, citing escalating tensions and the risk of being “hunted” by U.S. authorities. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, characterized the strained relationship with the United States as precariously close to breaking point.

Zakharova emphasized the dangers of travel to the U.S. during a news briefing, attributing the escalating confrontation to actions taken by Washington. “In light of the increasing tensions in Russian-American relations, which are on the brink of collapse due to U.S. fault, personal or official trips to the United States carry serious risks,” she stated.

She urged citizens to avoid travel during the holiday season, particularly to the U.S. and its allied nations, including Canada and select EU members. This warning reflects the deteriorating diplomatic ties, which both Russian and American officials describe as the worst since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, largely fueled by disagreements surrounding the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The relationship reached a critical juncture last month following Ukraine’s use of U.S. and British missiles to target Russian territory, prompting Moscow to lower its nuclear threshold. Both nations have accused one another of unjustly detaining citizens under fabricated charges, further deepening the rift between them.
