Russia Launches Nighttime Attacks on Odesa, Causing Fatalities and Widespread Damage

Russia has conducted nighttime attacks on energy facilities in the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa, resulting in significant damage to critical infrastructure and leaving at least one person dead. Officials reported that the assaults cut electricity to the Black Sea territory, further exacerbating the humanitarian situation.

Regional authorities confirmed that “critical infrastructure has been damaged,” leading to outages of electricity, water, and heating in parts of the city. Emergency services characterized the damage as “large-scale,” with images released showing firefighters responding to multiple blazes.

The governor of Odesa reported that a 77-year-old man was killed by shrapnel in a village outside the city. Additionally, the governor of the neighboring Kherson region stated that a 55-year-old man was killed in Kherson city.

While there was no immediate comment from Moscow regarding the attacks, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia had launched four missiles and 181 drones, including Iranian-designed Shahed drones. Kyiv successfully shot down 115 of these unmanned aerial vehicles.

The recent escalation in drone and missile strikes comes amidst growing rhetoric in Washington and Moscow about potential negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.
