In a significant escalation, Russia launched a new barrage of drones and missiles overnight, targeting western Ukraine and causing widespread damage and casualties. At least two people were killed when Russian forces struck the city of Chernivtsi near the Romanian border.

The cities of Lviv, Lutsk, and Chernivtsi bore the brunt of the attack, with other regions also affected, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.

“Russia continues to escalate its terror, launching hundreds of drones and missiles, damaging residential areas, and killing and injuring civilians,” Sybiha posted on X, calling for stronger sanctions against Moscow. “Russia’s war machine produces hundreds of means of terror each day. Its scale threatens not only Ukraine but the entire transatlantic community.”

In Chernivtsi, regional governor Ruslan Zaparaniuk reported two deaths and 14 injuries after Russian drones and a missile struck the city, located about 40 kilometers from Ukraine’s border with Romania. Several fires broke out, damaging homes and government buildings.

Meanwhile, in Lviv, near the Polish border, officials said 46 homes, a university building, city courts, and approximately 20 small to medium-sized business premises were damaged. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed the widespread destruction caused by the attack.

The ongoing assaults highlight the persistent threat posed by Russia’s military operations, with regional authorities and international partners calling for urgent measures to address the escalation.
