For 12-year-old JC Pukeke, rugby league has become more than just a sport it has been a lifeline, helping him overcome bullying, body image struggles, and serious mental health challenges.
JC’s mother, Char, said that exposing her son to both his traditional community and the rugby league environment in New Zealand made a profound difference. “He was able to see for his own eyes by looking at other people who are like him and the same size,” she explained. After spending four months in New Zealand, JC told his coach and his mum, “I love my body.”
At a young age, JC had faced bullying and body image issues that led to suicidal thoughts. Concerned for his wellbeing, Char took him back to New Zealand to reconnect with his cultural roots. It was there that JC discovered rugby league, which gave him a sense of belonging and pride. “I didn’t think much about it, but when Mum took me there, it did make me feel like I was connected to home,” JC said.
The NRL has praised the Kangaroos club, where JC now plays, for its inclusive culture, innovative spirit, and commitment to creating opportunities for young players. For JC, the club has provided not only a sporting outlet but also a vital community connection that has helped him rebuild confidence and self-worth.
Every week during the season, JC and his mum undertake a 10-hour round trip from Tom Price to Karratha so he can wear the Kangaroos guernsey. Despite the time and financial costs, Char says the effort is worth it because of the transformative impact the sport and the club have had on her son’s life.
For JC, rugby league is more than competition it is a source of identity, resilience, and hope, showing how sport can play a powerful role in supporting young people through personal struggles and connecting them to community.
