Rucsu Polls: Candidates Press for Fair Vote, EC Accepts Most Demands

2 min read

RAJSHAHI: With just over a week to go before the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (Rucsu) election, candidates have submitted a six-point demand aimed at ensuring a transparent and credible vote.

The proposals include:

  • Transparent ballot boxes
  • A voter list with photographs to prevent fake or proxy voting
  • Barring outsiders from within 100 metres of polling centres
  • Stronger security to avert unrest
  • Equal enforcement of the electoral code of conduct to curb black money and ensure a level playing field
  • Manual vote counting

Vice president candidate Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir urged the administration to take the concerns seriously. “We don’t want to boycott; we want a free, fair, and impartial election,” he said. “If our demands are met, the Rucsu, senate, and hall union elections of 2025 will be historically acceptable.”

Chief Election Commissioner Prof Nazrul Islam said five of the six demands were “logical” and would be implemented. However, he rejected manual vote counting as “impractical,” citing the logistical challenges seen in the Jucsu polls. Instead, votes will be tallied using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), though transparent ballot boxes will still be used.

Campaigning entered its third day yesterday, with candidates canvassing across campus. Voting is set for 25 September, with results to be announced the same day.
