Far from the grind of the daily commute, Australia’s great rail journeys invite travellers to slow down and savour the ride. These are trips designed to be enjoyed, not endured, where the journey itself becomes the destination.
Some trains are living pieces of history, carrying passengers back in time as they glide between heritage stations. Others rival luxury ocean cruises, offering fine dining, elegant cabins and sweeping views of the continent’s vast landscapes.
Rail enthusiast Stephen Whitaker believes train tourism provides a gentle and underrated alternative to air travel. “It’s a relaxed way to see the country, perfect for those in no particular hurry to get anywhere,” he said.
From the iconic Ghan slicing through the Red Centre to heritage steam locomotives lovingly restored by volunteers, Australia’s railways offer more than transport. They deliver an experience steeped in nostalgia, comfort and romance, reminding travellers that sometimes the best way forward is to take the slower track.
