The intriguing idea of casting Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic villain Victor Von Doom has roots that stretch back even before he took on the role of Iron Man. Joe Russo, who is co-directing the upcoming Avengers films with his brother Anthony, recently shed light on the genesis of this bold concept, attributing it to none other than Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “That was Kevin,” Joe Russo shared in an interview with the online outlet Omelete.
Interestingly, this conversation took place quite some time ago. While Victor Von Doom was portrayed by Julian McMahon in the 2005 film, Downey made his mark as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man. Yet, Feige held on to the notion of casting Downey as Doom for a future project. Once Downey expressed interest, he attempted to persuade the Russo brothers to reunite the team for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars and Avengers: Doomsday. Initially, they were hesitant. “Robert tried to talk us into doing it, and we said ‘no,’” Joe recalled. “We just didn’t have a story. We didn’t have a way in. We were resistant for a while.”
However, inspiration struck when Steve McFeely, one of their key collaborators, presented a compelling idea that resonated with the brothers. “One day Steve said, ‘I have an idea.’ We went, ‘That’s the story!’ That story has to be told. It’s a really powerful story.”
As anticipation builds for the next Avengers installments, the prospect of seeing Downey take on the role of Victor Von Doom adds an exciting layer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, promising a storyline that fans will not want to miss.
