Transport activities in Bagerhat came to a halt on Sunday morning as members of the Sorbodolio Sommilito Committee initiated a district-wide blockade in response to the Election Commission’s proposal concerning constituency cuts.
Activists took control of significant areas such as the Bagerhat- Khulna Bus Stand, Noapara on Khulna-Mawa highway, Katakhali, Mollahat Bridge, Signboard Bazar on Bagerhat-Pirojpur road, and they initiated the blockade at 8 am. Bagerhat’s road connectivity to the rest of the country was completely cut off.
The rest of the population, as well as local business owners, joined in by closing their shops. Local leaders from several parties came to the aid of and supported their leaders and joined the protest, as members of the committee convened. This has stemmed from an earlier announcement during a press briefing on 19th August, where the protest was disclosed to be part of a three-day program.
The timetable presently consists of three agendas:
21 August: Blockade on Kathakali-Noapara highway (9am-1pm)
24 August: Blockade on Khulna-Mawa and Pirojpur-Bagerhat highways (9am-4pm)
Conduct sit-ins at the offices of the deputy commissioner and district election offices.
On Monday, a protest rally and sit-in at the election commission office will be held which will shift the focus towards the initiative aimed at resisting the changes in proposed constituencies.
