2 min read

Indian cricket star Rishabh Pant has made headlines by leaving the Delhi Capitals just days before the mega auction in Jeddah. Amidst swirling speculation, Pant clarified that his departure wasn’t about money, countering claims that financial disagreements were the cause.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar suggested on Star Sports that retention fee disputes might have played a role, but emphasized Delhi’s desire to bring Pant back due to his leadership role. Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer are anticipated to ignite a bidding war among the 10 franchises at the auction on November 24 and 25.

Before the retention deadline, Pant posted a cryptic message on social media, hinting at uncertainty about his auction prospects. The Delhi Capitals, retaining only a few key players, have the option to use Right to Match cards for former players during the auction.

Pant’s return to competitive cricket in IPL 2024 followed a challenging recovery from a severe car accident in 2022. Known for his pivotal role in India’s 2021 series win in Australia, Pant remains crucial for India’s success in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series starting in Perth.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed confidence in Pant’s potential, calling him a “generational talent” in red-ball cricket. Ganguly, who has worked with Pant at Delhi Capitals, predicted a significant impact in the series, highlighting Pant’s impressive performances in previous Test matches.
