As the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr fade into memory, Bangladesh’s garment industry is swiftly returning to its bustling rhythm. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) reports that of the 2,024 factories under its umbrella, an impressive 2,012 are now operational, translating to a remarkable 99.4% resumption of activities.
Concentration is particularly notable in the Gazipur and Mymensingh regions, where 851 out of 854 factories are back in action. In Savar, Ashulia, and Ziran, 399 out of 403 factories have resumed, while Narayanganj has 186 operational units, Demra boasts 320, and Chittagong features 336 active factories.
According to BGMEA, the wage distribution for February has been completed by 2,019 factories, with only five failing to meet their obligations. March saw 2,008 factories disbursing salaries, though 16 still have pending payments.
Thanks to timely wage and bonus payments and the prompt reopening of facilities, there have been no reported incidents of worker dissatisfaction in the post-Eid period. Currently, only 12 factories remain closed for the holiday, a mere 0.59% of the total.
These figures underscore a swift normalization in the garment sector following the Eid break, fostering a positive environment among workers that is crucial for the overall health of the nation’s economy.
