Rampal Power Plant Sets New Generation Record, Powers Over 7% of Bangladesh’s Electricity

The Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant at Rampal is now operating at full capacity, marking a major milestone in Bangladesh’s energy sector. Unit-I began commercial production in December 2022, followed by Unit-II in March 2024, and together they have been delivering a steady supply of electricity to the national grid.

In August 2025, the plant achieved its highest-ever monthly output, generating 771.70 million units of electricity with a Plant Load Factor of 78.58 percent. This accounted for 7.15 percent of the country’s total electricity production of 10,100 million units for the month. Over the past three months, the facility has produced a combined 2,036.4 million units, consistently contributing between 7 and 8 percent of Bangladesh’s total power supply.

The coal-fired plant operates on imported fuel but employs ultra-supercritical technology with advanced environmental safeguards. These include flue-gas desulfurization, an electrostatic precipitator, a 275-metre chimney, closed-cycle cooling, and a zero liquid discharge system measures designed to ensure cleaner and more efficient power generation.

The project, a symbol of India-Bangladesh power sector cooperation, was built at a cost of around US$2 billion on 915.5 acres in the Bagerhat district’s Rampal upazila. Unit-I, with a capacity of 660 MW, was first synchronised with the national grid on August 15, 2022, during trial operations, injecting 91.7 MW at the time. The full plant now delivers 1,320 MW, all of which is supplied domestically.

To support distribution, a 230 kV double-circuit transmission line from Rampal to Khulna and a 400 kV double-circuit line to Dhaka completed up to Gopalganj have been constructed, ensuring the plant’s electricity reaches homes, businesses, and industries across the country.
