Dhaka woke to good air quality on Saturday morning with an air quality index reading of 50 at 9 01 am. The city ranked 84th among world cities with the poorest air quality.
Kinshasa, Jakarta and Manama occupied the top three spots with AQI readings of 158, 157 and 139 respectively.
An AQI of 0 to 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy for sensitive groups, 201 to 300 poor and 301 to 400 hazardous. The index helps government agencies tell people how clean or polluted the air is and what health effects might be a concern.
In Bangladesh the AQI is based on five criteria pollutants including PM10, PM2.5, NO2, CO, SO2 and ozone.
Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution. It typically turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.
Breathing polluted air remains a major global health risk, linked to higher rates of heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, lung infections and cancer.
