South Africa took a lead of 140-6 in the opening Test match against Bangladesh, who had collapsed to 106 all out. Kagiso Rabada, who was the fastest to take 300 Test wickets, celebrated his achievement.
Bangladesh, however, failed to reach double figures, with opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy scoring 30 on a lively pitch. South Africa’s seamers Rabada, Mulder, and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took three wickets each.
Bangladesh’s bowling began with Rabada bowling Mushfiqur Rahim on 11, and soon after, Rabada made it 301 Test wickets, removing Litton Das for one.
Bangladesh’s first success came from right-arm seamer Hasan Mahmud, who removed South African captain Aiden Markram for six off seven deliveries. Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, Bangladesh’s main spinner in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, bagged a five-for, becoming only the second Bangladeshi to take 200 wickets in Tests after Shakib.
Security was heavy around the stadium, as fans of Shakib Al Hasan clashed with those protesting against him near the venue. Bangladesh have never beaten South Africa in a Test, and the match was marked by public anger and security concerns.
