A man in Queensland has been sentenced to prison after crashing a stolen vehicle that resulted in the death of his passenger. The court heard that the driver, 21-year-old Kyaharlem Hazard, was on parole when the incident occurred.

Hazard pleaded guilty in Toowoomba District Court to charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while excessively speeding and unlawful use of a motor vehicle at night with company. The prosecution outlined that Hazard was driving at speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour over a significant stretch of road in Toowoomba before losing control and crashing into a tree on Hursley Road late on July 14, 2023.

Police were pursuing the stolen car at the time of the crash, and CCTV footage showed Hazard’s vehicle traveling at 121 kilometers per hour. The court was told that his passenger, 18-year-old Heidi Riding, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. It was noted that she was not wearing a seatbelt.

Prosecutor Hamish McIntyre highlighted that Hazard, who had only been on parole for six days, should have been aware of the dangers given his criminal history, which included multiple dangerous driving offences. He emphasized that Hazard’s reckless behavior led to a tragic loss of life and posed a danger to the community.

The court sentenced Hazard, recognizing the severity of the conduct and the tragic outcome of the crash.
