A Queensland man has been charged with a foreign incursion offence after authorities allege he planned to travel to Myanmar to take part in the country’s ongoing civil war.
Police say Attilio Ivor Filip Dallavalle, 33, travelled to Thailand in January with the intention of crossing into Myanmar to engage in “hostile activities” alongside an armed group involved in the conflict. He was arrested on Wednesday after flying into Brisbane Airport, where Australian Border Force officers inspected his luggage.
During that inspection, officers allegedly found night‑vision equipment, military patches, and electronic devices containing “material of interest” to the Joint Counter Terrorism Team. Following his arrest, the AFP and Queensland Police executed a search warrant at a home in Rockhampton.
AFP Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt stressed the seriousness of the allegations, saying that travelling overseas to participate in hostile combat is a serious criminal offence. “Anyone who attempts to engage in such an act will be investigated and be held accountable for their criminal actions,” he said.
Dallavalle appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody, with his next appearance scheduled for May.
The foreign incursion offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
