Queensland Issues Urgent Evacuation Order as Copperfield River Floods Threaten Homes

1 min read

Residents living near the Copperfield River in Far North Queensland’s Gulf Country have been told to evacuate immediately, with authorities warning that rapidly rising floodwaters are already threatening homes.

The Etheridge Shire Council issued an emergency alert on Monday, citing a flash‑flood warning linked to the Copperfield Dam and Copperfield River system. People in low‑lying areas including the entire Einasleigh township have been instructed to leave without delay.

Mayor Barry Hughes said the situation was escalating faster than expected, with reports that several houses were already facing inundation. He urged residents to move quickly toward higher ground along the Einasleigh Forsayth Road, stressing that hesitation could put lives at risk.

Some locals have already evacuated and are now gathered at a designated muster point on the outskirts of town. Emergency crews are continuing door‑knocks, though authorities admit they cannot reach every property due to worsening conditions.

Officials warn that the flooding may intensify, and those who have not yet left are being strongly advised to do so immediately.
