Less than a week after revealing a major data breach, Qantas announced Monday that it has been approached by a potential cybercriminal. The airline disclosed that up to six million of its customers’ records may have been compromised during the cyber attack.
In a statement, Qantas said it is working to verify the authenticity of the contact and has notified the Australian Federal Police. The airline did not specify the nature of the contact or whether any ransom demands were made.
This development follows the airline’s discovery of unusual activity on a third-party platform used by its contact center, prompting an investigation. Last week, Qantas indicated that a significant portion of the stolen data was still being assessed, but the breach was expected to impact a large number of customers.
