Putin Says Russia Has No Concerns Over Greenland Dispute but Criticizes US and Denmark

2 min read

President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia has no concerns regarding the question of Greenland’s ownership, describing the dispute between the United States and Denmark as an internal matter for the two nations. Despite this neutral stance, he sharply criticized both countries for what he called their historically harsh treatment of the island. Moscow continues to closely observe the diplomatic tension that emerged after former US President Donald Trump expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, a move that strained relations between Washington and Europe.

Speaking in Davos, Trump said he had no intention of using tariffs or force to gain control of Greenland. Instead, he suggested that an agreement could be possible regarding the semi autonomous Danish territory. Responding publicly for the first time, Putin said Russia has no objection to the American initiative and estimated that the strategically important island could be worth around one billion dollars.

During a meeting of Russia’s Security Council, Putin reiterated that developments surrounding Greenland pose no threat to Russia. He criticized Denmark for treating the island as a colony for decades, describing its approach as harsh and at times cruel, even though the issue receives little global attention today.

Tensions between Moscow and Copenhagen have grown as Denmark continues to provide military and financial support to Ukraine. At the same time, suggestions that Russia might have an interest in Greenland irritated the Russian Foreign Ministry, though officials avoided direct criticism of Trump due to his attempts to mediate an end to the war in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov added that resource rich Greenland is not a natural part of Denmark. The island already hosts a longstanding American military presence. Putin referenced historical examples such as the sale of Alaska and the Virgin Islands, arguing that based on inflation, land area and gold value, Greenland’s price could be around one billion dollars, a sum he believes the United States could afford.

Putin concluded confidently that the United States and Denmark will resolve the dispute on their own.
