Iran is witnessing a powerful surge of nationwide protests as thousands of people pour into the streets of Tehran and dozens of other cities. A verified video from the capital shows massive crowds filling the roads, with car horns blaring as drivers attempt to move through the swelling demonstrations.
The unrest began on December 28 after the Iranian rial suffered a historic collapse. Business owners, hit hard by soaring inflation and worsening economic instability, shut their shops and launched the first wave of protests. The movement quickly spread and has now reached at least fifty cities.
Several areas have seen violent clashes. More than forty people, including protesters and security personnel, have reportedly lost their lives.
In a sign of growing government alarm, authorities cut off internet access across the country on Thursday. The blackout has further highlighted the scale of the crisis and the determination of demonstrators who continue to challenge the state despite the communication shutdown.
