Power and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan and Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan faced protests and obstruction from local stone workers on their return from a visit to the ecologically sensitive region of Jaflong in Sylhet on Saturday.
The incident took place around 11:45 am in the Jaflong Bazar area, where angry workers blocked the road, disrupting the advisers’ motorcade. Tensions rose further when some protesters lay down in the road to protest.
Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sarkar Mohammad Tofael Ahmed stated that the stone workers suddenly blocked the convoy, but police swiftly intervened and cleared the route.
The advisers reached Haripur Guest House safely around 12:30 pm.
The protest was prompted by the government’s decision to permanently suspend the leasing of all stone quarries in Jaflong and other parts of Sylhet.
Earlier, during the visit, Environment Adviser Rizwana Hasan told journalists, “We will no longer permit stone extraction in ecologically and aesthetically significant areas like Sylhet.” She also mentioned plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Tourism to promote eco-friendly tourism and create alternative livelihoods for those involved in stone extraction
