Protesters have announced a continuous sit-in program demanding BNP leader Ishraq Hossain be appointed as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). On Wednesday (May 14), during a rally in front of the DSCC headquarters in Gulistan, it was announced that their sit-in program would resume on Thursday morning.
From Wednesday morning, under the banner of “Dhaka’s General Voters’ Blockade of Nagar Bhaban, Organized by: Citizens,” people from various wards gathered in front of the Nagar Bhaban with separate processions. They held a human chain on the road in front of the main gate of the Nagar Bhaban. At one point, when the main gate was opened, they entered the premises. A group of protesters staged a sit-in on the stairs of the Nagar Bhaban and continued their protest until noon before leaving.
Retired Senior Secretary Moshiur Rahman announced the program. He stated that there were various delays regarding Ishraq’s oath-taking. Despite the court’s verdict and the Election Commission’s gazette notification, Ishraq has not been handed over the responsibilities as the people’s mayor. Due to the delay in administering Ishraq’s oath, a continuous sit-in program has been announced again from Thursday.
