Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday called on Islamic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to expand their efforts in social business to better support the Muslim community globally.
He made this appeal during a meeting with NGO leaders from various Muslim countries at the Jamuna guest house in Dhaka, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
“In our world, we focus on women and healthcare. If you are poor, healthcare problems are a major issue. We have approached healthcare as a means to support the poor,” Yunus said. He emphasized that social business offers a powerful avenue for delivering social support and encouraged young people worldwide to pursue social entrepreneurship and become catalysts for change.
The NGO leaders present expressed their appreciation for Yunus’s recent social business initiatives, which have inspired them to launch similar ventures in their respective countries.
Among the delegates were Eyüp Akbal, Secretary General of the Union of NGOs of The Islamic World (UNIW) from Turkey; Muhammed Hüseyin Akta, representative of the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA); Fauwaz Bin Hasbullah, Deputy Secretary General of Persatuan Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (WADAH) UNIW from Malaysia; Muhammad Abdus Shakoor, President of Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan and Deputy Secretary General of UNIW; and Salamun Bashri, a member of the UNIW auditing board from Indonesia.
Other notable attendees included Mahbub Ahmed, retired professor of Dhaka University and President of BIIT; SM Rasheduzzman, Chairman of SAWAB and member of the High Advisory Board of UNIW; Ali Afzal, Council Member of UNIW and Managing Director of Krishibid Group; and M Abdul Aziz, Director General of BIIT and Country Representative of IIIT, among others.
Yunus’s call aims to foster a culture of social entrepreneurship among Muslim NGOs, harnessing innovative business models to address social issues and uplift communities across the Muslim world.
