Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed on Sunday his commitment to relinquishing office by June 30 next year, asserting that a national election will be held before that deadline. With an unwavering stance, he emphasized that he will not remain in the role even for a single day beyond the specified date.

During a briefing outside the state guest house Jamuna, Shafiqul Alam, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, conveyed that Prof Yunus made it explicit to political leaders during a meeting on Sunday night. The gathering was convened to discuss pressing national issues, including impending political reforms and the upcoming general election.

“Prof Yunus made it clear that the election would take place between December and June 30. He said he will not stay in the chair even for a single day after 30 June next year,” Alam stated.

The meeting also delved into the current political climate, with Prof Yunus describing it as a state of war. He warned of efforts by certain factions to destabilize the country, saying, “After banning the Awami League, they are trying to destabilise the country. We must protect ourselves from this.”

He called for national unity amid these turbulent times, urging leaders to set aside divisions. “We must overcome divisions and maintain consensus,” he emphasized. “There is a conspiracy, both inside and outside the country, aimed at pushing us back into subjugation. They are trying to destabilise the country.”

As the nation faces uncertain political waters, Prof Yunus’s firm stance and call for unity highlight the critical importance of cohesion in navigating the challenges ahead.
