President Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, on Sunday night, avoiding potential prison time for federal felony gun and tax convictions.
This decision marks a departure from the president’s earlier statements, where he ruled out using his presidential powers to assist family members.
Hunter Biden faced sentencing for his gun conviction and had recently pleaded guilty to tax charges. The legal troubles began publicly when he disclosed a federal investigation in December 2020, shortly after his father’s election.
In previous comments, including a statement on November 8, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had reiterated that no pardon would be granted. However, Biden’s statement on Sunday described the prosecution as politically motivated, asserting that Hunter was targeted due to his familial ties.
Hunter Biden was convicted in June for lying on a federal form while purchasing a gun, claiming he wasn’t using drugs. He was also set to stand trial for failing to pay over $1.4 million in taxes but chose to plead guilty to avoid further distress to his family.
In response to the pardon, Hunter Biden expressed gratitude and a commitment to helping others facing similar struggles. A spokesperson for the special counsel did not comment following the announcement.
