Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha etched his name into Liverpool history on Monday night, scoring a 100th-minute winner to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The reigning champions looked in control early, with Ryan Gravenberch opening the scoring before new signing Hugo Ekitike a long-time Newcastle target doubled the advantage. The hosts’ task became even harder when Anthony Gordon saw red for a reckless tackle on Virgil van Dijk.
But Newcastle, roared on by a raucous home crowd, mounted a spirited fightback. Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back before substitute William Osula levelled in the closing minutes.
Just when a point seemed certain, Ngumoha making his senior debut latched onto a late chance to become Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.
The win leaves Liverpool alongside Tottenham and Arsenal with maximum points from two matches. Newcastle remains without a win this season, still missing forward Alexander Isak, who is the subject of strong transfer speculation linking him to Anfield before the window closes.
Arsenal visits Liverpool next weekend in what could be an early test of title ambitions.
