Political Uncertainty Deepens Ahead of 2025 Elections

1 min read

Bangladesh remains in a state of political flux as the country prepares for national elections expected in late 2025 or early 2026. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, continues to face pressure from rival factions and civil society groups demanding electoral transparency and reform.

The political landscape shifted dramatically earlier this year when a student-led uprising forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina into exile, ending her 15-year rule. Since then, Yunus has embarked on a series of diplomatic visits, including meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III, to bolster international support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced plans to nominate Tarique Rahman as its prime ministerial candidate. Rahman, currently in exile, is expected to return to Dhaka between November and December to lead the campaign.

Observers warn that the upcoming election could be one of the most consequential in the country’s history. “This is a pivotal moment,” said political analyst Dr. Nusrat Jahan. “The choices made now will shape Bangladesh’s democratic institutions for a generation.”
