Police in Kolkata used a heavy baton charge to disperse protesters who attempted to march toward the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission on Tuesday. Members of several Hindu nationalist groups carrying sticks and saffron flags tried to advance toward the mission but were stopped by security forces.
The situation escalated around 2 p.m. when protesters broke through barricades and attempted to enter a high security zone. Police intervened, leading to clashes, and eventually used force to clear the area.
The demonstration had been called by several groups in response to an incident involving a Hindu youth in Mymensingh. Organizers had urged supporters to surround the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission.
Protesters later claimed they intended to submit a memorandum but were blocked by police, which triggered the confrontation. Several people were injured during the baton charge.
