A mid‑air collision between two aircraft in the US state of New Jersey has left one pilot dead and another critically injured. The crash occurred on Sunday above Hammonton Municipal Airport, according to local authorities.
Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel said emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the accident at 11:25 a.m. local time.
Video from the scene showed one aircraft spiraling rapidly toward the ground after the collision. Police and fire crews later brought the resulting fire under control.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the crash involved an Enstrom F‑28A and an Enstrom 280C helicopter. Each aircraft had only the pilot onboard. One pilot died at the scene, while the other was transported to hospital in critical condition.
Sal Silipino, owner of a café near the crash site, said both pilots were regular customers who often had breakfast together. He and other patrons saw the aircraft take off moments before the collision. “After a short while, one aircraft started spiraling downward, and then the other followed in the same way,” he said.
