After dominating the surfing season, Molly Picklum still had one final challenge defeating reigning world champion Caroline Marks of the United States in a title-deciding showdown at the WSL finals in Fiji. The 22-year-old from Australia’s Central Coast rose to the occasion, securing her maiden world title in spectacular fashion.
Two days after her triumph, Picklum admitted the magnitude of her achievement was still sinking in. “The way the system is, it’s definitely a big mountain to climb at the end of the year,” she said. “I had so many cool moments that were career highlights already, and then to get the cherry on the top like that is the dream.”
Touching down in Sydney on Thursday afternoon, Picklum was greeted by an emotional crowd of family, friends, and supporters. With the trophy in hand and a smile as bright as the waves she conquered, she embraced those who had cheered her on from the beginning. “I had all my school friends and friends that have seen me from young and just watched it all unfold, and then mum meeting me at the top of the escalators was super cool,” she said.
Her victory cements her place among Australia’s surfing greats, marking a career milestone that many in the sport spend a lifetime chasing. For Picklum, the journey to the top has been as rewarding as the title itself and the celebrations are only just beginning.
