Perth’s $1.8 Billion Women and Babies Hospital on Track, Cost Risks Remain

Construction has begun on Perth’s new Women and Babies Hospital, with the state government confirming the $1.8 billion project is on schedule for a 2029 opening, though costs may rise.

The 12-storey, 274-bed facility will replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital and is being built at the Fiona Stanley precinct in Murdoch. Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said earthworks are underway and piling will start in November, stressing the government’s commitment to delivering on time.

Carey admitted the budget could blow out but said the Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery is monitoring costs closely. The project has already faced hurdles, including the collapse of one joint venture partner earlier this year, leaving European builder Webuild without a partner.

Originally planned for the QEII Medical Centre, the hospital was relocated in 2023 to Fiona Stanley, a decision that drew criticism but broad agreement that a modern maternity hospital was urgently needed.
