Over 6,000 Drone Attacks by Russia in One Month: Ukraine Faces Escalating Threats

2 min read

Recent reports reveal a dramatic escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Moscow launching more than 6,000 drone strikes in just the past month. AFP and Kyiv Independent sources confirm that these extensive drone attacks have significantly challenged Ukraine’s security and stability.

The report states that these drone strikes have put countless civilians at grave risk, targeting residential areas, a kindergarten, and ambulance services, among other critical infrastructure.

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia fired a total of 6,297 long-range drones in July, nearly 16 percent more than in June. Meanwhile, Kyiv Independent reports that Russia launched 6,129 Shahed drones in July more than fourteen times the 423 drones used in the same month last year.

Yuri Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force, warned that the actual number of drone strikes could be even higher, as these figures are estimates.

On July 8, the day before a major attack, then-US President Donald Trump announced that his administration would supply Ukraine with additional defensive weapons. After months of withholding certain arms due to shortages, Trump emphasized the importance of Ukraine having the capacity to defend itself. The US also pledged to fund the Patriot air defense system for Ukraine.

The relentless drone strikes culminated in a devastating assault on Kyiv on July 31, which killed at least 31 people, including five children, and injured 159 others. According to AFP, Russia launched 198 missiles in July, the highest monthly total since June 2024. In June, Russia fired a total of 5,337 drones, the second-highest monthly figure, with a record 479 drones launched in a single day just before a key Istanbul summit.

This ongoing campaign of drone warfare not only reshapes the battlefield but also raises serious concerns about international peace and stability. The scale and intensity of Russia’s drone attacks highlight a new phase of modern conflict, posing a significant threat to global security.
