Over 150,000 Rohingya Enter Bangladesh in Last 18 Months Amid New Violence and Rising Concerns

Bangladesh is facing a record-breaking influx of Rohingya refugees, with nearly one and a half lakh new arrivals fleeing Myanmar in the past 18 months. This marks the highest number since 2017, creating an immense humanitarian and logistical challenge for the country. On Friday, July 11, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi disclosed this information during a briefing in Geneva.

Grandi explained that ongoing violence and conflicts in Myanmar are driving these people to seek safety in Bangladesh. He stated, “Due to the persecution and targeted attacks in Rakhine State, thousands of people continue to flee in search of security.” Most of the new arrivals have taken shelter in the already overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, where the situation is deteriorating further.

In 2017, the Myanmar military launched a brutal crackdown on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine, leading to a mass exodus of approximately 750,000 refugees seeking refuge in Bangladesh. The crisis has since underscored the urgent need for international aid and sustained efforts to resolve the situation and facilitate the safe return of Rohingya to their homeland.

The UN official praised Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts, saying, “Despite enormous difficulties, Bangladesh has continuously provided shelter to Rohingya refugees across generations.” However, he emphasized that long-term solutions require increased global support and swift, effective action.

As the world faces this ongoing humanitarian challenge, Bangladesh remains committed to protecting Rohingya lives and securing their safety, awaiting increased international cooperation and robust initiatives to address the crisis.
