Oscars to Introduce Stunt Design Category for 100th Anniversary

In a landmark decision, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday that a new Oscar for Achievement in Stunt Design will be awarded during the celebration of the Oscars’ 100th anniversary. Films released in 2027 will be eligible for this prestigious honor.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their enthusiasm in a joint statement, highlighting the integral role stunt design has played in filmmaking since the dawn of cinema. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion,” they said.

Details regarding eligibility and the voting process for the winners will be revealed in two years. This announcement comes after a growing campaign advocating for a “best stunts” category, with supporters emphasizing that the contributions of stunt performers—who often risk their lives—deserve recognition alongside other technical achievements like sound mixing, makeup artistry, and visual effects.

Stunt work has already been acknowledged at other prestigious awards, such as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where the show “Fall Guy” won the 2024 prize for outstanding stunt performance.

The Academy has been actively expanding the Oscars to include categories that reflect the increasingly complex nature of filmmaking. Last year, a new category for casting was introduced, which will see its first award presented next year.
