Optus Under Fire Over Delayed Emergency Call Notification

1 min read

Perth : Optus is facing mounting criticism after revelations that emergency services were not immediately informed of a major network outage that disrupted dozens of Triple Zero calls.

Chief executive Stephen Rue told reporters on Friday he only became aware of the issue at 1:30 pm AEST on Thursday. However, Acting WA Premier Rita Saffioti said Optus did not notify WA Police until just after 9:00 pm AWST more than nine hours later.

During that time, at least 26 emergency calls failed to connect, raising serious concerns about public safety.“The fact that emergency services were not notified when the outage commenced is the most significant issue,” Ms Saffioti said.

The delay has sparked questions about Optus’ crisis management and communication protocols, with state officials demanding answers on why authorities were left in the dark for so long.

The federal government is also expected to seek clarification from the telco, as regulators assess whether Optus breached its obligations to ensure uninterrupted access to emergency services.
