A high-profile press conference scheduled in Delhi by ousted top leaders and former ministers of the Awami League was abruptly canceled, just before it was set to discuss Bangladesh’s history of what they termed as ‘genocide.’ The event was initially announced as a significant platform to shed light on this sensitive issue, but the organizers decided to withdraw at the last minute.
According to a report by Hindustan Times on July 24, the conference was planned for the late afternoon, around 5:30 PM local time. The event was organized by Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, who identified himself as the secretary general of the US chapter of ‘Bangladesh Human Rights Watch.’ It was expected that prominent Awami League leaders and ministers would speak on recent violence in Gopalganj and address allegations of ‘genocide’ in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, in Gopalganj district, a special commission has been formed to investigate the deterioration of law and order, including attacks on government buildings and the district jail that occurred on July 16. A press release issued on the same day announced that a retired judge would head the commission, which aims to ensure a thorough inquiry into the incidents that disrupted citizen safety and law enforcement.
The cancellation of the Delhi conference marks a significant development amid ongoing political tensions, with the organizers citing unspecified reasons for withdrawing from the event.
