According to Avinash Singh from Astor Legal, these illicit items are openly available for purchase on websites like Fakies, where a “novelty ID” can be bought for just $79. The ease of access and minimal risk of detection highlight a growing challenge for law enforcement agencies.
In Australia, the “100 points of ID” system is a critical method used to verify an individual’s identity. A convincing fake driver’s license, when paired with other fake identification documents, can potentially grant access to more sensitive or complex documents such as passports. This raises serious concerns about how easily these counterfeit items could be used to commit identity fraud or other criminal activities.
However, authorities face significant hurdles in determining the true scale of the problem. Most fake licenses confiscated during police operations are of poor quality, and their obvious flaws make them easy to identify. “The ones seized are the really low quality ones,” explains a source familiar with the issue. “We don’t really know how prevalent higher-quality documents are because those are much harder to detect.”
Experts warn that the most serious threat posed by document fraud is not from casual users seeking to bypass restrictions, but from more sophisticated criminal enterprises. “While document fraud is a really serious problem, the most serious aspect of it is a level above the everyday users trying to gain access to restricted services,” she added.
