A report published by The New York Times on Sunday (4 January) states that the United States had been applying pressure for months to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power. According to the report, Washington carried out several actions in the Caribbean region including attacks on boats, the seizure of oil tankers, and a strike on a Venezuelan dock as part of its strategy.
Despite these moves, Maduro showed no reaction and instead continued posting dancing videos on social media. The report says members of the Trump administration convinced the President that Maduro was mocking the United States, which ultimately led to the decision to remove him through military means.
A U.S. government source told The New York Times that the administration had already drafted a plan to place newly appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez in charge of Venezuela. The source added that weeks before Maduro’s capture, the U.S. was considering Rodríguez as a potential successor. Her expertise in managing Venezuela’s oil industry reportedly impressed the Trump administration, leading them to view her as a viable figure to run the country.
