Poet, thinker and political analyst Farhad Mazhar has called for nursing to be recognized as equal in status to the medical profession, describing it as a noble vocation essential to the country’s healthcare system.
Speaking at a press conference organized by the Bangladesh Nurses Association (BNA) at the National Press Club on Thursday, Mazhar stressed that nursing is not subordinate to doctors. “Without nursing services, medical treatment itself is impossible. Therefore, the profession must be given its due respect,” he said. The event was held to demand reforms in nursing to ensure better and more people-centered healthcare.
Mazhar criticized the tendency to reduce healthcare to doctors, prescriptions and pharmaceuticals, calling it a misconception. He described this as “medicalization,” where illness is equated with prescriptions and opportunities for drug companies. True healthcare, he argued, means prevention, proper nutrition, sound agricultural policies and social security.
He warned that if nursing is not granted proper recognition and independence, the country’s healthcare system will grow even weaker. “It is now a matter of urgency to establish the rights and dignity of nurses,” he said.
