The Northern Territory’s newly announced $100 million flood recovery fund will be overseen by experienced public sector leader Ken Davies, who has been appointed director‑general of the program. Katherine MP Jo Hersey will serve as the minister responsible for administering the fund.
Chief Minister Eva Lawler said both Davies and Hersey would be “out on the ground” assessing damage firsthand and helping determine how funding should be prioritised across affected communities.
Lawler and Treasurer Bill Yan travelled to Canberra yesterday to meet several federal ministers, pushing for additional support. Speaking today, the chief minister said the goal was to keep the Territory “front and centre in the minds of the federal government as they move into that budget process.”
“So what we’ve done yesterday was lay the groundwork; the door is open and they are very, very willing to work with us,” she said.
While none of the $100 million announced today comes from the Commonwealth, Lawler confirmed the federal government is providing a 50–50 contribution for disaster relief assistance payments.
The Territory government says the new fund will help accelerate recovery efforts as communities continue to deal with the aftermath of widespread flooding.
