NSW Police to Receive Historic Pay Boost Amid Workforce Shortages

1 min read

New South Wales police officers are set to receive a “generational” pay increase of up to 40%, making them the best-paid in Australia as the force confronts severe staffing shortages.

More than 10,000 officers, including constables and sergeants, will see raises of at least 25% over four years, with simplified pay scales. This increase brings the salary for a level-three senior constable from $107,600 to $146,600 by mid-2027.

The deal, retroactive to July 1, aligns with union demands and introduces a $5,400 leadership retention payment for senior officers, along with first-year officer training allowances. Commissioned officers like inspectors and superintendents will receive pay rises between 20% and 27%, inclusive of the retention payment.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley commended the agreement for recognizing the challenges faced by law enforcement. The boost comes as NSW faces critical officer shortages and follows months of public-sector pay disputes, with key worker groups like nurses and transit staff threatening industrial action over pay.

Premier Chris Minns defended the government’s approach to public-sector negotiations, emphasizing steady progress on fair pay increases across frontline services.
