A New South Wales man has pleaded guilty to murdering his mother in a violent attack earlier this year, telling police he “didn’t feel bad” about the crime.
Court documents reveal that 43-year-old Shannon James Doble killed his mother, Nerol Doble, in January 2024 after an argument over a jerry can she intended to use for a lawn mower. At the time, Doble was living in a modified bus on her property in Bribbaree, north-west of Canberra.
When Ms Doble insisted he hand over the jerry can or leave, Doble struck her in the head three times. Another resident on the property tried to intervene, but Doble walked away and set fire to his mother’s house.
He then returned, forcing the other person aside, dousing Ms Doble with petrol, and setting her alight. Court records describe the ignition as an “explosion” that engulfed her lower body before spreading rapidly.
The witness attempted to extinguish the flames with a fly net and a bucket of water, but Doble poured more petrol on his mother before leaving the scene. Emergency services arrived soon after, but the injuries proved fatal.
Doble appeared via video link in Young Local Court this week, where he formally entered his guilty plea. Sentencing proceedings are expected to follow.
