North Korea has conducted a test of a long‑range strategic cruise missile to verify the integrity of its nuclear force and its ability to deliver a counterstrike amid what it describes as growing security threats. Leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the launch on Sunday, according to a report published Monday by state media outlet KCNA.
KCNA reported that the missile flew along a designated route over the West Sea (Yellow Sea) before striking its target, prompting Kim to express satisfaction. He stated that North Korea faces “various security threats,” making it essential to test the reliability of its nuclear deterrent and its capacity for immediate response.
The report added that Kim has vowed to continue all efforts to expand the country’s nuclear war capabilities without limit. The missile test is part of a series of activities Kim is undertaking ahead of the ruling party’s congress scheduled for early 2026, where he aims to showcase military and economic progress.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said they detected multiple cruise missile launches from the Sun’an area of Pyongyang around 8 a.m. on Sunday.
