Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud has firmly stated that there is no possibility of recounting votes in the highly debated Dhaka‑8 constituency, despite mounting pressure from both competing camps.
The seat saw a fiercely contested race between BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate Nasir Uddin Patwari. Abbas ultimately secured victory by a margin of 4,980 votes, receiving 56,552 ballots compared with Patwari’s 51,572.
Tension simmered throughout the evening as supporters from both sides questioned the outcome. Both candidates met with the returning officer to lodge formal complaints, each demanding clarification on the counting process.
At around 2:30 a.m. on election night, NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan held a press conference calling for a full recount under the direct supervision of the Election Commission. However, Friday’s statement from Commissioner Masud leaves little room for further challenge, effectively closing the door on any recount efforts.
