At least 20 students were injured in the early hours of Sunday after a violent clash broke out between Chittagong University students and residents from a nearby village.
The unrest began shortly after midnight when a female philosophy student, who lives in a rented building near the campus’s Gate 2, was allegedly assaulted by the building’s caretaker as she tried to enter. Witnesses said the caretaker fled when other students attempted to apprehend him.
Tensions escalated quickly as local residents began hurling bricks and stones at students. Running battles and scuffles erupted, with the confrontation continuing until nearly 3:00 am.
Student Abrar Farabi reported that Al Masnun, a leader of the Democratic Students’ Council, was among those injured. He added that attackers used loudspeakers to announce plans to target student residences and hostels.
University Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Haider confirmed that campus security and police were deployed to the scene in an effort to restore order. The situation was eventually brought under control, but the incident has left the campus community shaken and on edge.
