Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London clinic on Sunday at the age of 82, will be laid to rest in his northern hometown of Katsina on Tuesday, according to the state governor.

Buhari, a former military ruler who seized power through a coup in the 1980s, made a remarkable political comeback by becoming Nigeria’s first leader to peacefully transfer power through elections in 2015. He was re-elected for a second term four years later, cementing his place in the country’s political history.

In London on Monday, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima and government officials coordinated the repatriation of Buhari’s remains. The Katsina state governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, announced that after consultations with Buhari’s family, the body would arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday for burial in Daura, his hometown.

Tributes poured in from around the world, including from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised Buhari on the platform X for his wisdom, warmth, and steadfast dedication to the friendship between India and Nigeria.

Buhari was widely admired for his firm stance on anti-corruption measures, especially in Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north, earning him a dedicated following. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political landscape.
