Nexus Airlines to Cease Flights Connecting Kimberley and Darwin, Raising Concerns Over Rising Airfares

2 min read

Nexus Airlines has announced it will cease its flights between Western Australia’s Kimberley region and Darwin at the end of August, sparking fears of increased airfares and reduced connectivity in the remote area.

The airline, which operates alongside competitor Airnorth on the route connecting Broome and Kununurra in Western Australia to Darwin, has played a key role in fostering competition, leading to lower fares for travelers. However, its decision to withdraw has raised concerns about a potential price hike and decreased service options for residents, businesses, and essential services in the East Kimberley town of Kununurra closer to Darwin than Perth.

Nexus’s managing director, Michael McConachy, explained that low passenger numbers made the route unprofitable, prompting the suspension. He also cited intense competition from Airnorth, which has been a significant challenge in terms of commercial viability.

Since mid-2023, both airlines have been engaged in a price war, resulting in lower fares sometimes by over a third for local travelers. McConachy noted that having two airlines on the route had increased the total number of passengers and services, particularly during the quieter wet season.

The announcement has prompted calls for regulation to safeguard affordable flights. McConachy expressed support for government intervention on the route, suggesting regulation could ensure continued availability and affordability of flights to the region, especially where demand remains marginal.

As the route approaches its closure date, stakeholders and residents are concerned about the future of regional air connectivity and the impact of reduced competition on prices.
